Dear Members

On Thursday the 22nd of February from 4-6 pm Artemis Westenberg, president of Explore Mars, will give a guest lecture at the InHolland facilities in Deflt (Rotterdamseweg 141) about the status of the manned space mission to Mars. This will be an interactive lecture, this means that you can ask questions during the whole college.

Humans on Mars is the aim of several organisations and governments on Earth at the moment. A lofty dream, but how far are we in preparing for humans putting foot on Mars? Artemis Westenberg, as president and director of Explore Mars, Inc., is in a unique position to know what is happening as Explore Mars is the leading not-for-profit involved in making it happen.

With the yearly Humans to Mars Summit in Washington D.C. Explore Mars brings experts in all fields together. From rocketbuilders to food-on-Mars-growers, to planetary protection officers, to Hollywood, to the major (and not so major) space companies, to politicians and STEM educators discuss on stage how far they are and what still needs to be done or tested.

Next to that is Explore Mars together with the IAA the organisers of the ongoing workshops on what the ‘Mission Architecture’ will be. Similar to the Apollo program that brought us to the Moon, the human mission to Mars Program will have precursor missions to demonstrate the needed technology to ensure humans will travel to Mars safely, be able to do meaningful science on Mars safely and travel back to Earth safely. Each year Explore Mars is the editor of the ‘Humans to Mars Report’ that serves as a snapshot for Congress, NASA and Space industry on ‘where we stand right now vis-a-vis Mars?’

In this lecture Artemis will give us insight in the landing of humans on Mars in 2033 and all the intermediate steps until then.

With Winged regards,
The 51st board of V.S.V. Sipke Wynia
